After watching the Black Friday news on the poor guy who was stomped to death at the front door of a Wal-Mart in New York -- I have come to the conclusion that things are not nearly as bad in this country as some would have us think.
Imagine if people were lined up for food, medicine, or some other necessity -- and there was only a small amount for a limited few. At that point, I could probably understand the ensuing insanity. Instead, these were people lined up for deals on wide screen televisions, computers, video games, and the like. This poor man died because someone had to get a "deal".
In another story from the past weekend, a professional football player accidentally shot himself in the leg in a night club. What was he doing with a gun without a permit? What was doing handling a deadly weapon so carelessly (he could just as easily killed someone else)? This is someone making millions of dollars to play a child's game -- how stupid is stupid?
Bottom line...we are not a country in financial and social woes. Don't give me news about recessions, failed mortgages, and job losses. We are a country where people make millions of dollars playing childhood games and far too many of us are too blinded by a flat screen television to care about what we do to get it. To be honest, that's the real problem...we just don't get it.

I've been doing time in Facebook.
After years of doing my own web site and one early false start with Facebook, I thought I would try it again. It's actually been a lot of fun. I've touched bases by "friending" former students, family friends, and even my own daughter. I've become a "fan" of BBC America, Fox News, and Star Trek.
I used to think that everyone might eventually have their own web site (like this one), but Facebook solves the one glaringly obvious problem...the technical issues of creating and keeping up the site. In addition, it solves one other problem. It enables the linking of members to rapidly connect with each other.
As my experience continues with Facebook, I'll comment occasionally -- if you're a Facebook member, drop in sometime.

Things to think about on rainy days (a short list of the great mysteries of life)...
- Commercials are sometimes the best things about television.
- Kids often see things much more clearly than we ever give them credit for.
- If we accept that hindsight is 20/20...we should just wait till it's all over to worry about it all.
- Why do we think that government can do any better than any one of us?
- How many teams that played well do we remember...now, how many winners do we remember?
- Failure is often more educational than success.
- Irresponsibility is often rewarded with more irresponsibility.
- Asking questions is easy, listening to answers is often the problem.
