Site Development and Deployment Options

Typical choices:

  1. Build it yourself and maintain it.
  2. Hire someone and you maintain it.
  3. Hire someone and they/others maintain it.

Emphasis must be on who maintains it!

Build it yourself and you maintain it...

bulletDevelop a plan...identify resources (people and money) and determine a schedule.
bulletAcquire resources...development hardware (production and testing computers, scanners, cameras, etc.), tools (editors, graphics tools), staff training.
bulletDefine requirements.
bulletAssemble content.
bulletAuthor/edit content.
bulletDesign and write code.
bulletTest.
bulletDeploy.
bulletEstablish a process for maintaining the site (personnel, resources, schedule).
bulletMonitor the site.

Hire Someone and you maintain it...

bulletDevelop a plan...identify resources (people and money) and determine a schedule.
bulletIdentify candidate developers...
bulletPrior experience with similar projects and customer like yourself.
bulletMay have technology preference (Unix v. NT, Java v. ASP, etc.)--does this matter to you.
bulletGet references, look at past projects.

bulletEstablish operational guidelines early.
bulletManage the effort.
bulletDevelop a transition plan to train your people to maintain the site.
bulletTrain/acquire people to maintain the site.
