 | Frames are nested subordinate document windows. |
 | Each frame window has a name. Windows can be referenced (e.g.,
new to create a new window). |
 | Frames have a mixed reputation. Older browsers (e.g., IE 2.0) did
not even support them. Mixed bag on how they are supported now.
IE/NN 4.0+ browsers have been much better including:
 | Ability to view source of any frame. |
 | Ability to print specific frames, entire frameset, etc.. |
|
 | Too often overdone or underdone. |
 | Very useful for advertising techniques (frame stays in place). |
 | User issues/considerations:
 | Keep number of windows to a bare minimum (2-3 tops) |
 | Separate user functions within each window (e.g., menu, content,
titling, reference/lookup). |
 | Use one menu consistently for navigation (left or right side). |
 | Avoid frames for decorative purposes. |
 | When linking in a main content window--stay in that window. |
 | Be careful about external links going to frame-based sites (frames
within frames within frames...). |
|
 | Newer WYSIWYGs are getting batter at supporting frames (FrontPage is
pretty good--used to be poor). |
 | Best uses for frames: informational web sites (great for organizing case
studies) and training sites (organize lessons). |
